How to reach Colchester Zoo


Colchester Zoo is located just south of Colchester, between Chelmsford and Ipswich.

It is situated on Maldon Road in Stanway.

Colchester Zoo is easily accessible by bus and train, and you can even travel by car or cycle. 

By Train

The Colchester Town station is the closest train station to the zoo. 

You can reach Colchester Town station from Liverpool Street services from London within an hour. 

Or take the Lowestoft or Norwich networks to Ipswich and then board the train to Colchester.

Colchester Zoo is 3.7 miles (6 km) from Colchester train station, and a taxi takes approximately ten minutes to get there.

You can also take bus 75 from outside the railway station.

By Bus

Bus No. 75 will drop you at the Colchester Zoo bus stop, which is hardly a 3-minute walk away from the attraction. 

All bus services to Colchester Bus Station regularly connect with the number 75 for Maldon or Tiptree and Colchester Zoo.

Getting to Bus No. 75

After getting off your train, leave the station via the exit on platform 4, turn left and walk to the main road at the bottom. 

On the opposite side of the road, you will see a layby bus stop – use the traffic lights on your right to cross the street. 

Since bus number 75 to Colchester Zoo starts from the main bus station, you must board bus numbers 63 or 84 to get there. 

Driving to the Zoo

If you are driving to Colchester Zoo, it is best to turn on your google maps and follow the directions. Or you can set your Sat Nav for CO3 0SL.

You can take the A1124 exit (Junction 26) off the main A12, following the brown elephant signs and using the new Stanway Western Bypass.

From the M25: About 40 minutes from Junction 28 of the M25 to reach the A12

From Southend: About 1 hour’s journey, 40 miles using A127 and A130 to reach the A12

From Hertfordshire: About 1 hour’s journey – 50 miles using A414 or A120 to reach the A12

Car Parking

Colchester Zoo provides free parking, which is, of course, subject to availability. 

Buy your Colchester Zoo tickets and arrive early to reserve a spot in the parking lot.
